What is Xinet's PDF Image Replacement Workflow?

Promoted from User Forums

Would someone describe the PDF Image Replacement Workflow? On the rare occasions where I export a pdf from InDesign instead of printing a pdf via a xinet pdf printer, I get a prompt asking if I need a "thin pdf" to be used in Xinet's PDF Image Replacement Workflow. I have read that thin pdfs use OPI markers instead of hi-res images, but does that mean such pdfs can only be viewed correctly by those who have access to the same art volumes that the creator of the pdf had? Would an operator need an additional FullPress plugin to create a thin pdf for this purpose?

In a related topic, does anyone have insight into the problems with InDesign's built-in Export to pdf function? I was recently told that exporting to pdf in InDesign(any version) should not be used because fonts and images will not necessarily display correctly. (We use FontReserve to manage fonts and would link images to HIGH original versions in this case.)

Occasionally our xinet pdf printer will stop working for a while and our only option will be to export a pdf from InDesign. We were told by our IT department that the only way to insure a successful pdf from InDesign without using a pdf printer is to first export to an .eps and then distill. They say "Export to pdf does not work in InDesign." This sounds fishy to me since Export has always seemed to work, so I hope someone out there has an answer.

The PDF image replacement (PDF_IR) workflow is pretty simple. A thin PDF (no images present so it won't preview nicely until after the replacement, and no plugins necessary to generate a compliant PDF,) is handed to a Xinet PFD_IR enabled queue. Xinet inserts the proper hires images while maintaining any transparency (you cannot go to a flattened file at this point.)

And we have lots of customers happily using the export function in InDesign, but there is some truth in the notion that there is better ways to generate PDF's
