Xinet on Windows with Active Directory - Comments or Suggestions

Promoted from the User Forums

I would like to find out if anyone has any experience with having Xinet on a Windows server vs. a Solaris server. We have experienced some major hurdles integrating a Solaris server into our Windows environment and we are wondering if it would be easier and work more seamless on Windows. Will active directory integration on Windows be stronger than on Solaris?

Active directory integration I think is the only current barrier to implementing a Xinet solution on Solaris at the moment. Although it can be done with PAM, the functionality from a Xinet perspective is considerably less than for OSX/Windows/Linux.

Although you cannot beat Solaris/SGI for stability, Xinet on Windows has improved leaps and bounds over the years and since v14/15 it has become a very stable product. The active directory integration on windows is seamless and you have the full functionality of the system.userlist etc.

What sort of environment is this server in and what is the expected usage?

Thanks for the information.

We are a printing company and our network environment is 99% Windows with active directory. We will be using FullPress to automate some of our workflows and for PDF creation and will be using webnative for internal asset management as well as client facing asset management.

No probs. If you are seriously considering it, obviously you should discuss all the implications with your integrator but a couple of basic points to consider are:

1. No FlashNet on windows (some may consider that a good thing!)

2. A lot of the third party (or integrator built) plugins only work on the unix platforms, this may or may not be relevant.

3. Over spec the box. We have found the overall Xinet experience on windows is dimished when the server is continuously under heavy load. (More so than the other platforms)

cheers
