sgi fc raid on linux

Promoted from User Forums

Hey all,

anyone running sgi raid on a linux machine? we are having some problems with older FC sgi raid. no matter how i set up the controllers i get "volume not on preferred path error".

i tried assigning both arrays to one controller and have the other controller as backup, but linux then just looks at the other controller.
any ideas are appreciated.
thanks

What is the model of SGI RAID and OS version?

I assume you are seeing that error message in the raid controller rather than on the system itself?

I would expect to see this if you had device mapper/multipath setup (i.e. using /etc/mpp.conf) as by default some raid so not handle the path checkers correctly.

Depending on the hardware/software there are a number of options to play with from changing the path checker type to disabling the auto logical drive transfer features etc.

I would assume if you only have one controller plugged into the host, you do not see these issues?

Sorry, brain is not in gear. I know who you are and the answers to some of those questions!

So the reality is that IF this raid is not under SGI support it might be a little hard to do properly as the firmware level is likely to be old and the smooth running of rdac/device mapper/mpp seems to be tied to sync'd up firmware levels.

I will send you a couple of suggestions in a seperate e-mail but I would advise against too much experimentation with it in a multi controller/path environment if it has live data on etc.

cheers
